Thurne
We have never visited the Norfolk Broads during the summer holiday months, and so the activity that greeted us on our arrival at Thurne in July 2009 came as a bit of a shock. The place was buzzing with activity: people strolling up and down the tow paths, numerous craft tied up at the water’s edge; and in the village itself the annual fete was being held: donkey rides, barbeques, games and an exhibition of photographs of the Thurne Home Guard.
This image was helped by the considerate parking (or should that be mooring) of the Broads cruises to allow the windmill’s reflection to appear. As the landscape photographer Matt Whorlow pointed out when he saw this image, it’s a slight shame that the cap of the mill wasn’t positioned to allow the sails to face the setting sun; but nevertheless the colours and light made a capture of this scene irresistible.
Canon EOS 5D and EF 16-35mm lens.
Exposure of 1/20th second at f/14.
