Castlerigg, Cumbria

Castlerigg is best known for its stone circle, a famous archaeological feature placed in a spectacular location overlooking Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell. However, as in so many locations where the attention is drawn to such an extraordinary subject, it is often worth a photographer's while to turn around and see what lies behind him. In this case a delapidated gate (which has since been repaired) invites the eye into a view across Saint John's-in-the-Vale.

Canon EOS 20D and EF 17-85mm lens.

0.5 second exposure at f/22.
