West Runton

West Runton is a fascinating location a short distance north of Cromer, on the Norfolk coast. The cliffs are high, dramatic and, as this image portrays, eroding. Flints, some as large as rocks, are scattered liberally around the beach. West Runton, uniquely perhaps for East Anglia, has rockpools. And along the length of the beach run these beautifully constructed sea defences, the pebbles that are trapped inextricably between the wood panels serving as a testament to the awesome force of the tide.

In an ideal world the sand in this image would have been virgin, unmarked by human feet. The strength in the line of sea defences as they lead the eye to the distant rays of late afternoon sun is enough, perhaps, to compensate for this deficiency.
