Coastal East Anglia 2
Frinton
Frinton, a genteel town on the Essex coast, at dawn. Apart from the occasional dog walker, golf player and three good landscape photographer friends - Clive Burrow, Kevin Goodchild and Chris Shepherd - humanity is noticeable by its absence. As is the sun. The British weather forecasting system being what it is, the only certainty about forecasted weather is its uncertainty. A prediction the night before of sunny intervals at dawn is not a guarantee that those intervals will appear.
A landscape photographer who admits, as Ian does, to a pathological disliking for early mornings is rather like a wine-lover quietly confessing to an aversion for red wine. By stubbornly refusing to rise sufficiently early to be on location for those magical moments that can materialize in the minutes before, during and after a sunrise, a landscape photographer effectively deprives himself of 50% of the opportunities that may be on offer at either end of the day.
Ian’s new year resolution for 2009 is to develop an affection for pre-dawn rising, to discover the excitement which many of his landscape photographer friends insist that they feel at the prospect of leaping out of bed before the sun has risen.
