Dedham, Essex

The small town of Dedham is located on the banks of the River Stour which, at this point, marks the boundary between Suffolk and Essex.

This photograph, taken from the Suffolk side of the river, will not win any awards for its compositional qualities. However, the light cast by the setting sun on this architectural curiosity (the purpose of which continues to elude us) was extraordinary and demanded capturing in a photograph, however inept the photographer might be. Seconds before this photograph was taken, clouds had concealed the sun; seconds after, the sun disappeared behind more cloud before sinking below the horizon and out of sight.

Canon EOS 5D and EF 24-105mm lens.

15 seconds exposure at f/14.
