Coastal East Anglia 1
Aldeburgh, Suffolk
The wonderful Maggie Hambling's sculpture of a shell, inscribed with words from Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes, stands erect on the beach at Aldeburgh, the town in which Suffolk-born Britten died in 1976.
The sculpture initially caused controversy and consternation, perhaps understandably given the rather quaintly conservative and genteel nature of the town. However, it is now a well-established and popular feature; shortly before this photograph was taken, a young family were clambering happily over the sculpture - a sight of which Ms Hamblin would in all likelihood thoroughly approve.
Canon EOS 20D; EFS 17-85mm lens.
