Coastal East Anglia 2
Southwold Pier, Suffolk
Like the town itself, there is something so quaintly and charmingly Edwardian about the pier at Southwold that it comes as a surprise to learn that the current structure was completed in 2002. As with so many piers that have the misfortune of confronting the North Sea in all its fury, the original pier had been reduced by frequent storms to a mere fragment of its original self. The new pier is, quite simply, a joy. Shortly before this photograph was taken, we sat on the pier in the warm October sunshine and ate a full English cream tea. Ecstacy.
