Thornwick Bay

Thornwick Bay, a short distance from the East Yorkshire town of Bridlington, is a location where the elements interact in the most dramatic way imaginable. Thornwick’s extraordinary geology is formed into ridges, ledges, arches and stacks by the sculpturing hands of a tempestuous sea. Perhaps it was an amplifying effect of the high chalk cliffs surrounding the bay, or perhaps the sea was indeed wilder than it normally is, but the noise of the waves as they continued their relentless assault was exceptional during our visit on that windy December day.

Exposure of 2.6 seconds at f/22.
