Moorland Milestone

This remarkable milepost, signposting “the road to Pickering”, stands at a bleak spot on Spaunton Moor, a short distance from the extraordinarily picturesque North Yorkshire village of Hutton-le-Hole. The milepost featured in a beautiful photograph on the front cover of a guide which we had discovered in our hotel room. There was no indication of the milepost’s location and so it was never our intention to track it down. It was simply a stroke of remarkable luck that led us to it as we drove over a cloud-capped Spaunton Moor.
