North Yorkshire
Whitby
Whitby is the North Yorkshire coastal town famous as the birthplace of Captain Cook, the home of the pioneering Victorian photographer, Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, and the location that marks Dracula’s arrival in England. It is also the proud owner of what must surely be the most photographed harbours and entrance piers in the country. Frank Meadow Sutcliffe was probably the first of many thousands of photographers who have stood in all weathers and focused their lenses on the piers’ many photogenic features.
As a result it is hard to identify a feature that hasn’t been photographed, and in the case of this photograph there was no attempt to do so. If Whitby’s piers and harbour are the most photographed, then so too are the buoys secured to the piers’ rusting railings.
Canon EOS 5D and EF 16-35mm.
Exposure of 32 seconds at f/14.
