Saltwick Bay, North Yorkshire
Saltwick Bay is a remarkable landscape. Located a mile or two south of Whitby, the bay is reached by a narrow, meandering minor road that comes to an end at, of all places, a cliff-top caravan site. It is only as you follow the footpath down the eroding cliff that the extraordinary beauty of Saltwick Bay becomes evident. Below the water surface lie great sheets of fossil-littered shale, while the landscape is punctuated by rocks and boulders which, at the time of our visit, appeared to be floating on the water.
